Could a restorative procedure help you improve your smile? Midtown New York, NY, dentist, Dr. Kara Mason, discusses a few procedures, including dental implants, that can help keep your smile full and healthy.
Root canal therapy
Inflammation or infection of the tooth pulp can lead to tooth loss if you don't have a root canal. This tooth-saving procedure may sound a little scary, but the procedure really isn't much different than the regular filling process. After the diseased or inflamed pulp is removed, the pulp cavity and the canals that reach from the top of the tooth to the roots are cleaned and shaped. Small posts may also be added to support the crown that will be added later. Filling the tooth with gutta percha or another flexible material seals and protects it.
Crowns and bridges
Whether you have a crack in your tooth, or you just don't like the look of one of your incisors, you can benefit from crowns. Crowns are hollow, tooth-shaped restorations that completely encase teeth, offering excellent support and coverage for cosmetic imperfections. Crowns can be used to:
- Strengthen cracked or fragile teeth
- Restore broken teeth
- Lengthen teeth
- Cover discolorations, unusually shaped teeth and other flaws
- Serve as an artificial tooth for a dental implant
They're also used to replace missing teeth. Bridges, restorations that consist of at least three crowns, close the gap in your smile. Crowns cemented to teeth on either side of the gap support a third crown that takes the place of the missing tooth.
Titanium dental implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss, thanks to the implants' ability to fuse to the bone in your jaw. Implants serve as replacement roots and anchor crowns in place. It usually takes about three to six months for the implant to bond to the jawbone. Once it does, you'll visit our Midtown New York office to begin preparations for your new crown.
When you choose a dental implant to restore your smile, you won't experience any decrease in biting power and will treat the new tooth just like your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing will help keep the implant healthy.
