How a Root Canal Can Treat Your Tooth Pain

A root canal treatment is performed in order to repair an infected tooth so that you don’t have to have it pulled. It is necessary when the nerves and blood vessels in the pulp of a tooth have been damaged or become infected. During the procedure, the pulp is removed, the tooth is then cleaned and sealed. Dr. Kara Mason is a dentist at Gentle Dental based in Midtown, NY. She uses root canals to treat her patient’s tooth pain when the pulp has become infected.

Dental Pulp Explained

Dental pulp is the soft tissue within a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. Each tooth’s nerve acts as a root that travels from the tip of the root to the pulp. This nerve is not essential to the tooth, although it provides sensations of cold or heat. A tooth can survive without the nerve, although its absence makes the tooth slightly more vulnerable to cracking.

Why You May Need a Root Canal

Midtown residents may need a root canal if bacteria have infected and damaged a tooth’s dental pulp and caused an abscess. As well as an abscessed tooth, a root canal infection can also cause:

  • Pain and swelling in the neck, face, or head
  • Drainage of pus from the tooth into the mouth
  • Loss of bone at the root-tip

Signs That You Need a Root Canal

Dental pulp can become irritated or infected by deep tooth decay or when a tooth becomes cracked or damaged. Signs that you may need a root canal include:

  • Tooth pain when you chew
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Persistent sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Gum inflammation
  • Swelling on the gum near a tooth
